Being both utopian and pragmatic to help build the future well-being of society

Our supported projects

Which programs we support

Demeter´s support to a project or a program goes far beyond the simple financial assistance to its beneficiaries and typically encompasses significant non-financial support.

Most sponsored programs are testing innovative solutions or tools and provide new approaches in order to replace, over the medium term, assistance with self-financial autonomy.

To achieve such a goal, the typical intervention mechanisms have some specific components:

  • Prevention of problems
  • Enhanced responsibility of the program´s beneficiaries, turning the person from a beneficiary to the actor of her/his own will.
  • Stable and measurable results for the program´s beneficiaries.
  • Search for long-lasting economic independence for the sponsored organization.

In its selection criteria, Demeter prioritizes the most innovative programs in its field and does not hesitate to fund newly started projects or organizations.

How we define and measure success

Programs serve as vehicles of sustainable change. Thus, defining success, in line with our beliefs and values, is critical for Demeter in identifying, selecting, and providing support for an intervention.

To assess success, we use the following performance indicators:

  • Provision of long-lasting economic solutions to societal challenges
  • Program scalability- a successful idea can be adapted to reach a bigger scale or replicated in various places, beyond the local initial context.
  • Program replication- lessons learnt on a project can be leveraged to address similar problems in other fields.
  • Program autonomy- the ability to reach financial self-autonomy.

The real measure of success lays in the ability to break from an often self-reinforced loop of a persistent socio-economic challenge and to turn it from a vicious circle into a virtuous one. Demeter also develop quantitative Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to track and measure its success and impact on final beneficiaries.

For example, economic reinsertion is pivotal in breaking down the vicious circle of the current prison system and creating a virtuous circle which is actually the result of many, complementary virtuous cycles, as seen below. Read more here

Our philosophy about Social Responsibility

Demeter's social responsibility underlines whom we sponsor and how we work with them.

Three principles best define our code of actions:

  • Working for Common Good is our first responsibility
  • It is better achieved by ensuring that all stakeholders in any given cause get a seat at the table and can participate actively to build long-lasting solutions for that cause. In that respect, philanthropists have a unique role of neutrality and openness to ensure all voices are heard.
  • Finally, our third responsibility lies in deploying a humanistic approach to enabling living better together as a society.
